The DS4000 supports various advanced networking features, such as Layer 2-7 packet classification, hardware-based IP forwarding, and a comprehensive range of routing protocols including OSPF, RIP, IS-IS, and BGP. It also supports technologies like TRILL, Virtual Port (VM) Switching, and hardware-based tunneling for both IPv4 and IPv6. Additionally, the DS4000 includes robust traffic management features with flexible QoS queuing and advanced per-port oversubscription controls.

The switch is compatible with third-party network operating systems, facilitated by the inclusion of an ONIE installer. This compatibility allows for easy integration with various network environments. The DS4000 also features redundant and hot-swappable power supplies and fans, enhancing its reliability and ease of maintenance. It supports a peak power consumption of 1100W and operates efficiently within a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels.

Physically, the DS4000 measures 438.5mm in width, 657.5mm in depth, and 43.1mm in height, making it compact and suitable for dense data center deployments. It includes front-to-back and back-to-front cooling options, facilitated by 6+1 redundant fans.
