STORDIS and BISDN Sign Distribution Agreement

We are pleased to announce that we have signed a distribution agreement with BISDN.

This step allows us to extend our Network Operating System (NOS) portfolio with the free and open source BISDN Linux. The NOS itself is developed in Berlin by BISDN, a company focussing on
whitebox switching and open networking solutions.

The latest BISDN Linux release 4.0 is based on the open embedded Yocto Dunfell Linux distribution and
runs a mainline 5.10 kernel. Utilizing the Linux network stack, it can be configured with all the standard
and well-known Linux tools. Therefore, it integrates seamlessly in any existing datacentre environment
and plays well with all the network automation routines usually utilised just for servers.

STORDIS now offers #Open2Support SLA Program – an advanced HW (hardware) exchange for
complete peace of mind to support your business whatever your requirement is.

STORDIS also offers an environmentally friendly approach by installing BISDN’s Linux Distribution
software to disaggregated Networking Bare Metal Switches already in place, reducing your capital
outlay by re-using existing hardware and also reducing your waste.

About BISDN

BISDN was founded in 2012 in Berlin, Germany, and set out to develop the software needed in the
rapidly changing world of software defined networking. Based on long-standing experience in the area
of telecommunication as well as datacenter networking, BISDN focusses on high-performance
whitebox switching and open network software solutions
. With BISDN Linux as the core of most of
their products, BISDN aims to build the free and open SDN solutions needed for the future world of
networking. For more information, visit https://www.bisdn.de

Having followed the development of BISDN for many years, I am proud that we have become the first
Value Added Distributor of the first fully open-source Switch Operating System. If you like Linux and you
want your network switch to be provisioned, configured and monitored the same way as a Linux Server
then you will love this operating system. When paired with the option for an enterprise-grade support
service, all the requirements to use this platform in a modern datacentre environment will have been
fulfilled.

Waldemar Scheck, STORDIS
CEO

We were not the first to have the idea of using the Linux networking for whitebox switches, as this dates
back to the early days of SDN. I believe, however, that we are the first to fully open source the controller
and the OS underneath. This is the next logical step towards open networking.

Dr. Hagen Woesner, BISDN
CEO

We are glad to see BISDN contribute its Linux-based platform to the open-source community. Open
Network Operating Systems are gaining in popularity and provide customers with flexibility and choice
and will further accelerate the open network movement.

Matthew Roman, Edgecore Networks
VP Marketing and Product Management

Now Ready to Watch – Recorded Webinar Session with Pica8: “#Back2Open Migrates Cumulus Linux Users to Pica8”

On August 17th, 2021 we held a very informative webinar together with our great partners Pica8 on our #Back2Open Program – our rescue program for stranded Cumulus Linux users. (Click here, if you want to learn, why certain Cumulus Linux Users will become stranded).

The live webinar was quite a success – admittedly with some small technical issues in the beginning. Despite that we had a great turnout and some very interested attendees with many great questions on Pica8 and the #Back2Open Program in general.

We once again would like to thank everyone that registered and attended for the great time and experience.

However if you were not able to attend the live webinar or have missed registering for it – do not worry: We have recorded the full webinar and uploaded it to our YouTube channel. You can check out the recorded webinar on YouTube or watch it directly below:

If you have any questions or want to learn more about #Back2Open, go ahead and check our #Back2Open Information page or get in touch with us.

Additional information as well as all the presentation documents can be found on the Live Webinar information page – feel free to check it out and share the documents with anyone that might be interested in it.

Pica8 Joins STORDIS’ #Back2Open Program for Stranded Cumulus Linux Users

We are pleased to announce that Pica8 has joined our #Back2Open Program.

STORDIS initiated the #Back2Open Program to support Cumulus Linux users impacted by the fall out between Broadcom and Cumulus Linux, that followed the acquisition of Cumulus Linux by NVIDIA (more information can be found here).

#Back2Open is our mission to help everyone affected by this Cumulus Linux situation, to easily switch back to a supported Open Networking NOS and bring them back on their Open Networking path, that they had initially chosen.
Pica8 have recognised the importance of this mission and are the first partner to sign up for the #Back2Open Program.

#Back2Open future-proofs the users’ networks by migrating the users’ current, soon-to-be outdated, Cumulus Linux platform to a new, actively supported and maintained Open Networking operating system (NOS), like Pica8’s PicOS.

To kick-off this extended partnership we will hold a joint live webinar with Pica8 on August 17th 2021, titled “#Back2Open Migrates Cumulus Linux Users to Pica8”, where we will inform about:

  • Introduction to STORDIS’ #Back2Open Program for stranded Cumulus Linux users
  • Introduction to Pica8’s open networking software: AmpCon Controller and PicOS Software Switches
  • Advantages of switching from Cumulus Linux to Pica8

Additional information on the webinar and the possibility to register for the event can be found here.

Our customers want the flexibility to select the best software and hardware independently from one another. #Back2Open is our Mission to help everyone impacted by the Cumulus Linux situation, to easily switch back to a supported Open Networking NOS and bring them back onto the Open Networking path that they had initially chosen. Pica8 with all the latest new features and strong industry position is the right choice.

Łukasz Łukowski, STORDIS
Chief Sales & Marketing Officer

As an independent software vendor, Pica8 is committed to allowing customers their choice of hardware. Our partnership with STORDIS welcomes Cumulus Linux customers onto our AmpCon Controller and PicOS Software Switches to future proof their white box strategies.

James Liao, Pica8
Founder and CEO

STORDIS Introduces #Back2Open Program for Stranded Cumulus Linux Users

We are happy to be able to introduce to you our #Back2Open Program for stranded Cumulus Linux users! Make the switch back to an actively supported and maintained Open Network Operating System (NOS) now – with a free NOS software license*.

Some background information:
You have probably heard the news by now that Cumulus Linux and Broadcom are parting ways, after NVIDIA acquired Cumulus Linux.

This development has a major impact on anyone that is using a combination of Cumulus Linux with a network switch that is powered by a Broadcom ASIC and will require some form of action to avoid that negative impact.

Our #Back2Open Program was initiated for exactly that reason: We will help you switch from Cumulus Linux back to an actively maintained and supported Open Networking OS (NOS) – with a free NOS license*.
*Only the software support would need to be acquired.

STORDIS Introduces #Open2Support: Service Level Agreements For Open Networking Switches

One of the main questions that comes up, when we talk to people that have had no contact with the Open Networking concept before, is the question of support: Who will take care of the hardware and software support? They think there is only limited advanced commercial support available for Open Networking Bare Metal Switches.

While that of course is not the case, we wanted to address this “fear” pesonally and decided to take things into our own hands and to add a great additional option for our customers:

With our many years of experience in the Open Networking field, helping customers to deploy and run their Open Networking Environments across the many different industries, we know what customers expect, when they are looking for support.
We used this knowledge as our basis to form a great new offering for the Open Networking Community (and anyone that wants to be part of it):

We now can offer you three types of Service Level Agreement that extend the standard manufacturers’ warranty and will cover all of your needs, in case you run into any issues.

Check these options out and read the information brochure below for more information.
